Within the last few months (really just a few weeks), Instagram (the ultra-popular image and video-sharing social media platform) has undergone major changes.
The updates began on July 23rd regarding teen account direct messaging and helping parents safeguard their kids along with adult-run accounts featuring children.
Now just a few days ago, META announced even more updates.
"People have always come to Instagram to share what they’re up to and where they are. Now, with reposts, the map, and the 'Friends' tab in Reels, it’s easier for you and your friends to stay in touch through the content you’re enjoying on Instagram," META wrote in an Aug. 6 news release.
Let's break down what these Instagram updates are and what they mean for your business:
Reposting: Like X, LinkedIn, and the original META social giant Facebook, Instagram finally allows you to repost public feed posts and video reels. Now only that, META has created a separate tab that will let you see all the content you've reposted, credited to the original poster, of course.
How This Update Helps You: This bodes well for business owners as their content has a chance to gain even more visibility.
Location-sharing map: Users can share their location with a specific group of people: either a custom list, Close Friends, or followers that they follow back. Until users choose to share their location, it is turned off.
How This Impacts Businesses: Users harness this feature to share with friends the concerts they are attending, the restaurants they eat at, and the stores they're shopping at. By making sure your content is up to date (posting at least three to five times per week), you can capture the interest of anyone who clicks on their friends' locations.
The new "Friends" tab on Instagram Reels: This feature is key in allowing users to see "public content your friends have interacted with, or recommendations from Blends you’ve started, and easily start conversations about them."
How This Impacts Businesses: Instagram no longers relies on static posts for content. You have to dive into video, and the best way to take advantage of the algorithm is through Instagram Reels. By creating content for Reels, you help spread your visibility in a variety of different ways.
